The bishops of Winchester held lands here from Saxon times, acquiring the estate from King Edward the Elder. The palace was built and expanded over centuries as a residence for one of the wealthiest bishoprics in England. A moated complex with fishponds, it hosted royal visits and ecclesiastical courts. Grade II* listed, managed by English Heritage.
