About
Bramber Castle is the ruins of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, formerly the caput of the large feudal barony of Bramber long held by the Braose family. It is situated in the village of Bramber, West Sussex, near the town of Steyning, overlooking the River Adur.
Built c.1070 by William de Braose after the Norman Conquest as the administrative hub of the Rape of Bramber, controlling the Adur estuary. Reinforced with materials from demolished Knepp Castle on King John's orders. Passed to the Mowbrays in 1326. English Heritage.
