Dover Castle stands on the white cliffs like a sentinel turned to stone. On a clear day, you can see France from the battlements — twenty-one miles of grey Channel water, the same crossing that every invader and every defender has watched since the Romans built a lighthouse here two thousand years ago. That lighthouse, the Pharos, still stands within the castle walls. It is the tallest surviving Roman structure in Britain.
Henry II built the Great Tower in the 1180s, a palace-fortress of unmatched sophistication — three floors of royal apartments with piped water, fireplaces, and a chapel. The castle withstood a French siege in 1216-17 that nearly toppled the crown; you can still see the emergency tunnel dug to outflank the miners. But Dover's finest hour came in the 20th century, when the wartime tunnels beneath the castle became the nerve centre of Operation Dynamo, the miracle of Dunkirk. The underground hospital, telephone exchange, and command rooms have been preserved exactly as they were in 1940.
Walking through those tunnels today — cramped, cold, with the sound of projected voices and wireless static — is one of the most powerful heritage experiences in England. Above ground, the medieval castle sprawls across the hilltop with concentric walls, a Saxon church, and views that explain, in a single glance, why they called it the Key to England. Every army that ever wanted Britain had to pass this castle first. None of them found it easy.

Terrain & Accessibility
The Great Tower has stairs but ground floor is accessible. The medieval tunnels and WWII tunnels have limited access for wheelchair users. The grounds are extensive with some slopes. English Heritage provides accessibility guides in advance.
