About

Housesteads Roman Fort was an auxiliary fort on Hadrian's Wall, at Housesteads, Northumberland, England. It is dramatically positioned on the end of the 1-mile (1.6 km)-long crag of the Whin Sill over which the Wall runs, overlooking sparsely populated hills.

Known as Vercovicium in Roman times, built c.124 AD as part of Hadrian's Wall. Garrisoned by up to 800 auxiliary soldiers for nearly 300 years. The fort covers 5 acres and includes remarkably preserved communal latrines, granaries, barracks, and a hospital. Excavated from the 18th century onward. Part of the Hadrian's Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site. Managed jointly by English Heritage and the National Trust.
