About

Malmesbury Abbey, at Malmesbury in Wiltshire, England, is a former Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It was one of the few English religious houses with a continuous history from the 7th century through to the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

One of the oldest continuously used churches in England, with roots in the 7th century. Famous as the site where monk Eilmer of Malmesbury attempted human flight in 1010, gliding over 180 metres before crash-landing and breaking both legs. The abbey was a major Benedictine monastery and burial place of King Æthelstan. The surviving nave is a fraction of the original building.
