Haughton Castle
📍 Northumberland, England
About
Haughton Castle is a privately owned country mansion and Grade I listed building, situated to the north of the village of Humshaugh on the west bank of the North Tyne. It is around 5+1⁄2 miles (8.9 km) north of the market town of Hexham, Northumberland.
Built originally in the 13th century as an upper-floor hall house—probably one of the earliest in Northumberland. Later fortified and expanded into a tower house. The Swinburne family held it for centuries. Legend tells of Archie Armstrong, a border reiver imprisoned in the dungeon who was forgotten and starved to death—his ghost reportedly still haunts the castle. Grade I listed, privately owned.
